Frank Nuyts werd geboren te Oostende in 1957. Hij studeerde eerst slagwerk en kamermuziek aan het Koninklijk Muziekconservatorium van Gent (o.a. bij Claude Coppens), daarna compositie aan het Instituut voor Psychoacoustica en Electronische Muziek (IPEM) te Gent bij Lucien Goethals.
Zijn eerste werken schrijft hij in een modernistische post-seriële
stijl. Hij wint daarmee in 1979 de Tenutoprijs voor compositie uitgeschreven door de toenmalige BRT, maar 'RastaPasta' voor solostrijkers en fluit uit 1986 betekent de breuk met dit idioom.
Vanaf dan wordt zijn werk bepaald door het "close the gap"-idee, gekenmerkt door een neo-tonale toonspraak en een zeer persoonlijke verwerking van invloeden uit de zogenaamde commerciële muziekgenres.
In 1989 richt hij samen met Iris De Blaere de groep Hardscore op, een eigenzinnige formatie van zeven muzikanten, met wie voor
deze nieuwe stijl ook een passend klankidioom wordt gezocht.
Voor deze groep componeert hij 6 "Boeken", waarvoor hij ook de tekst voor zijn rekening neemt. Verscheidene van deze Boeken worden op CD uitgebracht en wereldwijd enthousiast
ontvangen. (o.a. 'Surf Wind and Desire').
Toch schrijft hij ook nog composities voor klassieke bezettingen: naast losse orkestwerken, ook nog drie symfonieën (o.a. gedirigeerd door Dirk Brossé), 2 concerti (o.a. 'Woodnotes' voor marimba en orkest), de kameropera 'Ga.n' voor een ensemble van stemmen en synthesizers en werken voor grote crossover-ensembles (o.a.'When the tombs of brass are spent' en 'X -Raying my ... Radio'). Daarnaast ook nog heel veel kamermuziek, waarin dikwijls het slagwerk een zeer virtuose rol wordt toebedeeld. De pianoliteratuur verrijkt hij onder meer met 6 pianosonates.
Hij wint de eerste prijs in het Muizelhuiscompositieconcours in 1990, krijgt de Muziekprijs van Quebec voor zijn kamermuziekoeuvre in 1992 en ontvangt de Vijfjaarlijkse Cultuurprijs voor Muziek van de Stad Gent in 1995.
Vanaf 2002 levert hij composities voor het theatergezelschap Ensemble Leporello: (oa. muziektheater Bekket) (2003). Hij schrijft in 2004 in opdracht van het Symfonie orkest Vlaanderen "Different from habit" en in 2005 zijn 4de Symfonie (Brandgang) in opdracht van VZW Zonzo voor deFilharmonie. Hij schrijft “Rats and rabbits” voor Mozart 06, het Mozartfestival in het Concertgebouw Brugge uitgevoerd door het Spectra Ensemble. In 2006 schrijft hij eveneens in opdracht van het Transitfestival een werk voor Schlagquartett Köln en speelt het Taman trio “Bajadillas” op hun tournee doorheen de VS.
In 2007 schrijft hij voor het Spectra ensemble “The Abduction of the East”, een 35’ durend werk voor bas-bariton en een ensemble van 10 instrumentisten (voor Spectra) en een dansvoorstelling ‘Where the wind goes’ voor I Solisti, die gecreëerd wordt ism De Singel. De Japanse marimba virtuose Nozomi Abe vraagt hem een stuk voor de opening van het Yukomhama Festival 2009. Samen met Iris De Blaere en Dirk Opstaele van Ensemble Leporello creëert hij het melodrama ‘De Wijdere Wereld van Water’ dat 8 keer gespeeld wordt op de Wereldtentoonstelling van Zaragoza 2008, evenals op Odegand, de openingshappening van het Festival van Vlaanderen.
In 2009 wordt zijn eerste pianoconcerto ge creëerd tijdens de Week van de Hedendaagse Muziek in Gent, olv. Raf De Keninck en met als solist Erwin Deleux. In dat zelfde jaar componeert hij '5de symfonie' voor Ensemble Emanon en een nieuw muziektheaterproject 'Arabische Nacht' op tekst van Roland Schimmelphenning en opnieuw in samenwerking met Dirk Opstaele. De pianoliteratuur verrijkt hij ondermeer met 9 pianosonates, waarvan nummer 2 tem. 6 op plaat verschijnen op het labet Etcetera, gespeeld door jonge, beloftevolle pianisten (Benjamin Van Esser, Saori Oya, Elisa Medinilla en Marc Masson)
Hij doceert compositie en orkestratie aan de Hogeschool Gent.

Frank Nuyts was born in Ostend (Belgium) in 1957. He studied percussion, chamber music and piano in the Royal Conservatory of Music in Ghent as well as composition with Lucien Goethals and Karel Goeyvaerts at IPEM (Institute of Psychoacoustics and Electronic Music).
His first compositions are written in post-serial style. He wins the first prize in the national competition “Tenuto” of the Belgian Radio and Television (now VRT) with the orchestral piece “As if the hand never leaves” from 1979.'Sonivers II: Inmediaciones de la noche', a cantata for soprano, reciter, flute, chamber orchestra and tape was selected by the Belgian Radio and Television for the Italia Prize in 1982.
Around 1985 he is stilistically veering to post-modernism: elements of the so-called “commercial music” are from then on imbedded in compositions which remain multi-layered although rhythmically less complex. 'RastaPasta'(1986) for flute and solo strings and 'Woodnotes' (1987) for marimba and orchestra for the American virtuouso Robert Van Sice
In 1989 he founds with Iris De Blaere Hardscore, a group seeking
to establish the right instrumental sound for the new style. The group consists of electronic keyboards, amplified marimba, saxes, voice, electronic bass and drums. Six Books are currently composed for and recorded with this ensemble. Several times, Hardscore is linked to other ensembles, as for instance in 1991 with 'When the tombs of brass are spent'" for large brass ensemble, conducted by Dirk Brossé.
In 1990 he wins “Le prix de la musique contemporaine de Québec” for his chamber music output and the Belgian “Muizelhuis composition prize”. In the nineties he writes a Second and Third symphony, a chamber opera (“Ga.n”, scored for an all electronic orchestra), and many pieces for chamber ensembles. The Australian vocal ensemble “The Songcompany” commissions a work for six solo voices “Airs à gogo” which is premiered during the Brisbane Music Festival in 1994. In 1995 he receives the 5-yearly Prize for Music of his hometown Ghent.
In the same year he writes ''Hard Scores for Orchestra'' for marimba, vibraphone, piano and large orchestra, premiered and recorded in the Brussels Palais des Beaux-Arts. In 1997, 1998 and 2000 he releases 3 CD's with Hardscore In 1998 he is composer in residence of I Fiamminghi (Belgium) . He composes Hard Scores Book 5 'Surf Wind and Desire' for De Werf in Bruges (1999) and Book 6 “Monkey trial” in (2000) for the Festival of Flanders. Writes in 2002 three large sonatas for piano, which are premiered by three fabulous young pianists choreographed by Eddy Becquart in an ancient mining site in Houthalen (Belgium).
From 2002 on he composes almost exclusively for the Brussels theater company "Ensemble Leporello” ( ao. a musictheatre Bekket) (2003).
Composes in 2004 "Different from habit", commissioned by Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen.
In 2005 for "Oorsmeer festival" his 4th Symphony, performed by The Philharmony Orchestra. Rats and rabbits for the Mozart 06 festival in Concertgebouw Brugge.
In 2006 Transit festival (B) commissions a piece for Schlagquartett Köln. For ‘The Songcompany’ he writes ‘Old Airs’ on a poem by Less Murray and ‘The XXX Songs’ on texts by jelle meander.Taman trio performes ‘Bajadillas’ on tour in the US.
In 2007 Spectra Ensemble, conducted by Filip Rathé, performs ‘The Abduction of the East’ for baritone and ensemble, while I Solisti del Vento commissions a piece for ‘De Singel’ (Antwerp) as part of a dance production choreographed by Eddy Becquart and danced by Andreia Rodrigues
‘The Wider World of Water’ a recitativo accompagnato is premiered during the World Fair in Zaragoza 2008 by pianist Iris de Blaere and actor Dirk Opstaele. Ensemble Emanon commissions a pianoconcerto and performes it in ‘The Week of Contemporary Music’ in Ghent with pianist Erwin Deleux and conducted by Raf De Keninck. This piece is later selected by Iscm Vlaanderen. Musa Horti sings ‘The Accidental Martyr’ in Musica Sacra (Maastricht), a vocal piece on a text by Tom Robbins.
In 2009 he writes a ‘5th Symhony (fetish)’ again for Emanon to be performed in 2011.
A second project for piano and actor ‘Arabian Night’ for the same performers and based on a play by Roland Schimmelpfenning starts to tour.
Tae Yoshioka (Jap) commissions a ‘11th Sonata’.
