The title refers to the Rocky Bajadas in Arizona. These are shallow slopes that lie at the base of rocky hills, where materials accumalate from the weathering of stones. Bajadas are characterized by a mixture of boulders, gravel and sand. Because of these special features of the landscape there’s a bit more moisture at ground level, so that there’s also a bit more plant life possible there. The falling and rolling gravel is suggested by descending phrases. To give the listener an impression of the variety of colors and textures of these geological features, I constructed the piece by linking non-related fragments. Bajadillas brings together beautiful nature and the wideness of this desert area, native American heritage, and strong Spanish influence.
